Do you have a Hell Yeah folder?

I was scared to launch a newsletter and dragged my feet for ages. I thought I wouldn't have anything to say.

But I started it anyway. And this week(ish) marks one year.

🎉 Happy Anniversary, Email Newsletter! 🥳

And it turns out, I have a lot to say — especially when I let myself talk about the things that really interest me, not just what I’m “supposed” to write about as some kind of branding expert.

I recently read a newsletter from Justin Welsh where he shared that he remembers every harsh email he’s ever gotten, but can’t recall a single compliment word-for-word.

His fix is a folder called “Hell Yeah,” where he keeps the good stuff.

I haven’t gotten any hate mail yet (something to aspire to when my audience is bigger!), but I made a “Hell Yeah” folder anyway.

Because I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having a place to store kind words. Especially on days when self-doubt is louder than usual.

If you have a newsletter, I recommend you start a Hell Yeah folder too!

I also recommend telling people when you appreciate their stuff. You’ll really make someone’s day.

Goodies Just For You

WHAT I’M THINKING ABOUT: Anyone else remember the 1989 miniseries of Lonesome Dove? I was only 12 when it aired, but it made a big impression. I still remember crying my eyes out at the end. So when it was mentioned in the novel The Correspondent, I decided to pick it up. And then couldn’t put it down. The women are all richly-drawn, full humans, not vacuous supporting characters. I really loved it and couldn’t stop thinking (or talking about it).

WHAT I’M BAKING: In my first newsletter, I shared a recipe for a single serve chocolate chip cookie. That one is good for emergencies (and we all have cookie emergencies), but when I want a really perfect chocolate chip cookie with flaky sea salt, I reach for Smitten Kitchen's Salted Chocolate Chunk Cookies
